Strong voice of MEPs in defence of minority schools in Lithuania

Today another meeting of the Intergroup for Traditional Minorities, National Communities and Languages took place in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. On the request of the Chairmen of the Intergroup, Members of the European Parliament Jordi Sebastià (Spain), Nils Torvalds (Finland) and Kinga Gál (Hungary), the meeting was devoted to minority’s education in Lithuania. Statement of the Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania

Yesterday, at the request of parents I was present at V. Sirokomlės secondary school in Vilnius. There were two policemen from the Prevention subdivision of the First Police Station in Vilnius. They were carrying out operational activities based on questioning the teachers. It was all concerning an anonymous that was allegedly received by the police. The officers questioned the names of the participants of the legal rally and school strike organized in defence of the education of national minorities. This action is outrageous and unacceptable in a democratic state ruled by law; it is an attempt to intimidate the school community which in a legal and civilized way stands in defence of their rights. Unfortunately, it was not the first case of such outrageous authorities’ actions using the police help. Six months ago there was a search carried out during lessons’ time in the Vasilijus Kačialovas gymnasium in Vilnius and in the Sofija Kovalevskaja secondary school in Vilnius. Read more

Good results of Sunday’s elections predict successful outcomes of coming parliamentary elections

The elections were held in Lithuania last Sunday on June 7. EAPL members took part in them and according to the party their results were good. Such an assessment of the results of repeated local elections in Trakai and Širvintos districts as well as of elections’ of a member in a single-seat Varėna-Eišiškės constituency was presented by the Chairman of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, Member of the European Parliament Valdemar Tomaševski and EAPL Seimas Faction Vice Chairwoman Vanda Kravčionok during a press conference which took place in the Seimas on Monday. National minoritiesin Lithuaniawill stand for their schools

About two thousand people including students, teachers, and parents arrived on 1st June, on the International Children’s Day, to the square next to the edifice of the Government of Lithuania in order to express their protest against the destruction of national minorities’ education by Lithuanian authorities. Rally for the defence of the national minority schools

Rally against the discrimination of national minority schools in the Vilnius Region will take place on 1st June at 4 pm on Vinco Kudirkos Square near the Government of the Republic of Lithuania. The rally is organised by the Forum of Parents of Polish Schools and parents of Russian schools students. Read more

The appeal for the defence of Polish schools in Lithuania

On 29th April – 3rd May representatives of the Polish community in Lithuania visited Poland to celebrate the Day of Polonia and Poles Abroad and the 25th anniversary of the association ‘Wspólnota Polska’ (Polish Community) on the invitation of the Polish Foreign Minister Grzegorz Schetyna and the President of ‘Wspólnota Polska’ Longin Komołowski. On 2nd May the official meeting of EAPL delegation with Polish Vice Ministers of Foreign Affairs Konrad Pawlik and Henryka Mościcka-Dendys took place. During the meeting, the situation of Polish minority in Lithuania was discussed. Particular attention was paid to the problems currently surrounding the Polish education in Lithuania. Post-election analysis. Who won and who lost?

Elections to local governments’ councils took place this month in Lithuania.
Some players of Lithuanian political scene reported the decline of their popularity among voters. However, others, including the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania, enjoyed the growing support of the citizens.
