Statement of the Member of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania

Yesterday, at the request of parents I was present at V. Sirokomlės secondary school in Vilnius. There were two policemen from the Prevention subdivision of the First Police Station in Vilnius. They were carrying out operational activities based on questioning the teachers. It was all concerning an anonymous that was allegedly received by the police. The officers questioned the names of the participants of the legal rally and school strike organized in defence of the education of national minorities. This action is outrageous and unacceptable in a democratic state ruled by law; it is an attempt to intimidate the school community which in a legal and civilized way stands in defence of their rights. Unfortunately, it was not the first case of such outrageous authorities’ actions using the police help. Six months ago there was a search carried out during lessons’ time in the Vasilijus Kačialovas gymnasium in Vilnius and in the Sofija Kovalevskaja secondary school in Vilnius.

I turn to the Minister of Internal Affairs Saulius Skvernelis with a demand to immediately end the practices designed to intimidate citizens belonging to national minorities. I also turn to the Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius to urgently accredit schools of national minorities and not to increase social tensions.
