Commemoration of Lech Kaczyński in Lithuania on the initiative of EAPL–CFA

Figure of the former President of the Republic of Poland, late Lech Kaczyński, will be commemorated on the initiative of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance. Today, the factions of EAPL–CFA in the Vilnius region and in the city of Vilnius registered draft resolutions on giving the name of Lech Kaczyński to a wide and beautiful square near the Houwalt manor in Maišiagala and to the street-nook in the centre of Vilnius next to the Gedyminas Avenue.

During his first visit to Lithuania, President Lech Kaczyński together with President Valdas Adamkus went to Maišiagala and visited the legendary patriarch of Vilnius – the Prelate Priest Józef Obrembski on the eve of his 100th birthday anniversary.

Marija Rekst, the mayor of the Vilnius district, indicated that apart from giving the square the name of Lech Kaczyński, the self-government will also place a commemorative plaque next to the Museum of the Prelate Priest Józef Obrembski, paying tribute to the visit of presidents Lech Kaczyński and Valdas Adamkus

Due to the upcoming celebrations of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s and Lithuania’s independence, today the EAPL–CFA faction of the Vilnius city presented the Local Government Council a project regarding the decision to give the name of Lech Kaczyński to the street-nook in the centre of Vilnius just next to the Gedyminas Avenue in order to refine closer relations between the two neighbouring states.

President Lech Aleksander Kaczyński (1949 – 2010) was Lithuania’s great friend, Polish politician and lawyer, anti-communist opposition activist, President of Warsaw, President of the Supreme Audit Office, Minister of Justice, associate professor of the University of Gdańsk and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw, President of the Republic of Poland in 2005-2010.

Together with the President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, he promoted partnership relations between Poland and Lithuania, sought to regain sovereignty, jointly strengthened the regional command of states, encouraged mutual understanding between Lithuanians and Poles. President Lech Kaczyński was a great friend of Lithuania and a lover of the Vilnius Region.

The former leader of Poland visited Lithuania 16 times (in 2006-2010), each time visiting the Vilnius Region.

Decisions on the commemoration of Lech Kaczyński at the Meeting of Local Government Councils should be adopted on 26th January in the Vilnius district and on 7th February in the city of Vilnius.

The EAPL–CFA faction – ‘Valdemar Tomaševski Block’ unites 21 councillors in the 31-member Council of the Local Government in the Vilnius district, and 10 councillors in the 51-member Council in the city of Vilnius.
