German minority defends Polish schools in Lithuania

The German minority in Poland expresses its solidarity and support for the Polish minority in Lithuania, which is fighting for the survival of their schools.
‘We are deeply concerned about the situation of Polish minority’s education in the Republic of Lithuania, and express our solidarity and support for the Polish minority in Lithuania, which is forced to undertake such drastic measures as strike action to defend their rights,’ reads the statement, which was issued a few weeks ago by the Board of the Union of German Social and Cultural Associations in Poland.

‘We call upon both the Government of Lithuania and the Association of Poles in Lithuania to make an effort to understand the arguments mutually and regulate the functioning of Polish-language education in such a way that would keep this treasure unscathed – even if it eventually requires adjustments,’ reads the statement.

The authors of the statement are concerned about the actions of Lithuanian Government towards the educational system of Polish and other national minorities, whose lack or ineffectiveness has led to the school strike.

‘Naturally, we support the cause of Polish minority in Lithuania, and express solidarity towards them. We address the Lithuanian authorities with an urgent appeal to revise the planned changes in education laws and to normalize the relations between the state and the Polish minority in Lithuania,’ reads the appeal of the Board of the Union of German Social and Cultural Associations in Poland.
