The plenary session of the European Parliament is taking place this week. Most meetings and tasks are organised remotely due to Covid-19. Among the many current issues related to combating the effects of the pandemic, the European Parliament also discussed the state of human rights and democracy and the Union’s policy in this area. Chairman of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance
During today’s plenary session in Brussels, the European Parliament adopted the Minority Safepack resolution, which is important for traditional, autochthonous national minorities. The resolution is a package of proposals of changes for European law, which are supposed to guarantee the protection of autochthonous national minorities and introduce several legal acts of the Union enabling better and more effective preservation of culture, traditions, and education in regions inhabited by national minorities. ‘It is possible, that the present government is formed illegally,’ said Valdemar Tomaševski, chairman of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance (EAPL-CFA) and Member of the European Parliament during the press conference that was organised in the Seimas on 13th November. According to the politician, it is likely that 4 members from the new ruling majority swore unlawfully last Friday, because the Electoral Law to the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and certain procedures for appealing against the election results in the Constitutional Court were violated. Moreover, the oath was taken by the President of the Constitutional Court Dainius Žalimas, who has no legitimacy and has been holding this office illegally since summer. Read more
According to the former judge of the Constitutional Court, professor of constitutional law Vytautas Sinkevičius, the complaint of the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania-Christian Families Alliance (EAPL-CFA) regarding gross violations during this year’s parliamentary elections should be submitted to the entire Seimas for consideration. Chairman of the Federal Union of European Nationalities (FUEN), Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Lorant Vincze has turned to MEP Valdemar Tomaševski and the Association of Poles in Lithuania (APL) with a request to support another pan-European initiative supporting traditional national minorities and asked for help in collecting signatures in Lithuania. Last Monday, on 19th October, Representatives of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) met with the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance (EAPL-CFA) in the Seimas of Lithuania. The meeting was organized in connection with flagrant violations of the electoral law during the parliamentary elections currently taking place in Lithuania. The facts about the rigging of elections were widely echoed and received a reaction also in European countries and international organizations. Read more
‘The Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania – Christian Families Alliance (EAPL-CFA) condemned the violence and the use of force against peaceful protesters in Belarus in the first days after the elections in this neighbouring country,’ said Valdemar Tomaševski, the chairman of this party in an interview for ‘Delfi’. In the opinion of the politician, ‘there is even no question about the fact that our party justifies such actions (of Lukashenko – author’s note), and we said about it last Tuesday, right after force was used against people.
